Goby

Goby is a desert themed dish garden.  We drilled a hole in a goldfish bowl to give it proper drainage and planted three distinct plants inside.  The first is a cactus called Sulcorebutia pulchra. S. pulchra is a beautiful little cactus. In fact, 'pulchra' means beautiful in Latin -  this plant is definitely named well.  It has yellow, curved spines (which makes it very safe to touch) and a green body with red tinge. This particular S. pulchra has already formed a small clump that will continue to grow. The second plant is Cotyledon orbiculata.  C. orbiculata is actually an extremely varied species.  This particular variety has small, plump, green leaves with burgundy margins.  It will grow into a very cute clump as it spreads around the surrounding 'desert' .  The third plant is Crassula mesembryanthemoides, which is a very unusual and rare plant.  It has thick, whitish/grey leaves that form a loose rosette.  It has beautiful bouquets of yellow florets.  We used sand for the top dressing in this arrangement to resemble the desert.  All three plants will continue to grow and fill up the fishbowl.  Water weekly when it's hot and dry.  Do not water if soil is wet or it is getting regular rain water.
